The challenge
Nigeria's 37 million SMEs — responsible for 48% of national GDP — were systematically underserved by legacy financial infrastructure. Through 200+ business interviews in Lagos and Abuja, Lemu identified four compounding pain points that kept SMEs financially constrained. 1. Fragmented financial tooling: Nigerian SMEs juggle a commercial bank, a payroll spreadsheet, a third-party POS terminal, and a separate accounting tool — none of which talk to each other. Reconciliation is a manual weekend exercise that creates costly blind spots. 2. Slow, opaque banking rails: Legacy bank transfers take hours, fees are buried in fine print, and cash-flow visibility is near zero. Poor financial decisions made in the dark cost SMEs an estimated 18–30% of potential revenue annually. 3. Payroll compliance burden: Calculating PAYE, computing pension deductions, and filing statutory returns requires specialist knowledge most small businesses cannot afford to retain in-house — leaving them exposed to regulatory penalties. 4. High barrier to contactless payments: Traditional NFC-capable POS hardware costs ₦30,000–₦80,000 per terminal and requires lengthy bank approval processes — effectively locking micro and small merchants out of the contactless economy.
Our diagnosis & solution
Rather than patch a single pain point, Lemu built an integrated suite — analytics, payroll, contactless payments, and a mobile wallet — operating on CBN-compliant infrastructure through a partnership with Safe Haven MFB. 1. Business Analytics: A live financial dashboard aggregates every transaction, invoice, and payroll event into one unified view. Business owners get variance alerts, cash-flow forecasts, and exportable reports — without needing a finance team. 2. Payroll Management: Automated salary disbursement handles PAYE tax computation, pension remittance, and statutory deductions in a single workflow. The compliance engine updates automatically when Nigerian tax regulations change. 3. NFC Tap & Go/QR Payment: Merchants accept contactless card payments and QR scans at point-of-sale with no dedicated hardware. Settlement hits the Lemu wallet within seconds, with a full transaction audit trail. 4. Mobile Wallet: The Lemu app handles wallet funding, bill payments, inter-bank transfers, and account management — secured with Face ID. Designed for mobile-first African markets where branch banking is slow and inaccessible.
